The Longest Scarf in the World! by Gretchen Wilson The International Year of Natural Fibers was formally anounced in Rome at the FAO on Jan 22, 2009. See the official UN website and a film of the announcement with speeches from world fiber leaders at http://www.naturalfibres2009.org/en/index.html . For 50 years the rise of synthetic fibers has swallowed the textile trade leaving whole regions of the world who grow natural fibers, in poverty. Not only do most health experts agree that natural fibers are healthier for our bodies and homes; and healthier for the environment; but many now see a return to natural fibers as a key to reducing poverty and hunger around the globe. The well respected agricultural development group, Heifer International, is partnering with Keep the Fleece to raise money for the "largest fiber flock in the world". You can be a part of this great effort through scarf making "The Longest Scarf in the World" is officially started! You can create a scarf team, solicit sponsors of $10.00 per inch and have tons of fun creating your scarf for a geat cause. Not only will you raise money for needy fiber farmers, but you can raise awareness of natural fibers, and fiber crafts too. See the www.keepthefleece.org to register your team and find details. Scarves will be joined and displayed at the New York Sheep and Wool Show in October. Start scarfing
